Records are broken at this year’s Street Market!

The sun shone in Austwick this Spring Bank Holiday and over 1,800 visitors descended on the Dales village for a day full of fun, sun and enjoyment.

Records were broken in more ways than one this weekend.  Austwick village had a record number of visitors, raised a record amount of money (over £11,000) for Austwick Parish and the Jubilee Playing Fields and a new course record was set for the Under 12 and Under 16 fell races by brothers Harry and Luke Bowen.  It was a clean sweep for the Bowen brothers as James Bowen also took second place in the Under 12 race.

The Senior Austwick Amble Fell race was won by Kieran Hodgson, and Deborah Gowans, in the ladies veteran over 50s category, took first place for the ladies.  Age obviously knows no boundaries when it comes to fell racing!

Austwick Cuckoo Festival and Street Market, now in its 33rd year, has always been a village affair, and this year was no different.  Local businesses provided some fantastic prizes for the grand draw and tombola, as did many local people, who also donated some great items for the spares, magpies and clothes stalls.  Great Yorkshire food was on offer including the Hog Roast (which sold out in record time), bacon butties, pie and peas, scones, cakes, WI afternoon teas, and the bus stop cafe was full to bursting all day!

Children won coconuts at the coconut shy, played on the bouncy castle and won sweet treats once they had scoured the village for answers to the quiz.  Zoot provided his own brand of entertainment, great fun as always, and the animals at the children’s farm definitely enjoyed all the attention -particularly Geisha the pony!

This year, in the run up to the main event, the quiz and games night arranged by Wes Spensley and Martin Pettiford on Saturday was well attended and enjoyed by all.  Even the wet weather on Sunday evening didn’t put a dampener on the Austwick Music Evening (new for this year), organised by Philip Hoyes, as many locals turned out to enjoy live music from the Confederation Orchestra, The Moonbeams, Heather & Guy and the Rocking Cuckoos!

The fantastic community spirit in Austwick was definitely on show over the bank holiday weekend and the Street Market Committee would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who provided donations, volunteered on and in the run up to the event and attended to support the village on the day!

We’ll see you next year!
