Spring is upon us and the Big Day is nearly here…

Updates – Austwick Cuckoo Festival and Street Market

Spring Bank Holiday, Monday 26th May, will soon be here, and the village will be once again opening its street to locals and visitors alike.  Over the past few months, preparations have been underway there are more events, music, games, stalls and entertainment than ever before.

Children can try their luck with the quiz or the coconut shy, visit the miniature farm, try out a fire engine and much more!  Great Yorkshire Food will be the treat of the day, whatever takes your fancy; home baked treats in our bus stop cafe, steaming pie and peas, delicious cakes from the local WI, a hog roast, bacon butties and much more.  The Oak Quartet Jazz Band will be the musical accompaniment to the day, watch the stunning shire horses march through the village, take a look at some classic cars and be amazed at the incredible jokes and tricks from Zoot the entertainer!

If you’re feeling like your New Year’s resolutions have drifted astray, dust off your trainers and get preparations underway, because the village will also play host to the Austwick Amble Fell Race. Details of the races can be found at the Fell Race links

Austwick will also host a number of family evening events in the run up to the big day:

  • On Saturday 24th May, a Family Fun Evening will be held in the Parish Hall from 7.30pm.  There will be a quiz, games, pie and peas supper and a licensed bar and tickets (£5 per adult, £1 per child) will be available to purchase from Austwick Post Office.
  • On Sunday 25th May, Austwick Music Evening will be held at the Jubilee Playing Fields from 6pm.  This family-friendly, free social evening will feature live musical performances from the Rocking Cuckoos, Heather and Guy (www.facebook.com/bettolina.music), Confederation Orchestra and The Moonbeams (www.themoonbeams.co.uk).  There will be a licensed bar and this is an outdoor event so bring suitable clothing.

Finally, a last plea to local residents!  If you have any items of unwanted clothing, furniture, gifts or toys, we will be collecting any items you wish to donate (along with raffle ticket stubs/money) on Monday 19th and Thursday 22nd May.

Also, don’t forget, the road closure will be in place between the school and the post office on the day of the event (26th May 2014) between 10am and 4pm.
