Fell Race Report and Results 2015

This year’s Austwick Amble, held in conjunction with the Annual Street Market, was held in dry but overcast conditions this year.  The event attracted a record numbers of entrants, some of who had travelled from far afield, including a party from Orion Harriers in Essex and a family from Sark in the Channel islands.

Runners received enthusiastic support from spectators, particularly at the start and finish located in the centre of the village.

This year there was a full programme of  junior races from Under 12 up to Under 18.

No less than 55 Under 12s and Under 14s got proceedings underway from the village green at 11.45am.

The Under 12s negotiated a tough 2.5k course including a circuit of the Little Norber field just off  Thwaite Lane. The winner this year was James Bowen of Ambleside  AC in a time of 9mins 46 seconds, closely followed by his twin brother Harry only 9 seconds behind.  This reverses the 2014 result when Harry was just ahead of James!  In 3rd place was Sam Smith of Wharfedale Harriers with local runner Jack Hutchinson (Settle Harriers) in fourth.

First Under 12 girl was Sophie Stanworth from Trawden AC in 11:47 followed by team-mates Amelia Dugdale and Abigail Stratton with 12:27 and 12;30 respectively.  Just behind was Settle Harrier Erin Cummins who had another fine run to finish 4th in 12:43.

The Under 14s ran slightly further than the Under 12s, with an additional spur added to make up their 3.1k course.  Logan Hargreaves (Wharfedale) came out winner in a time of  14:06 with Sebastian Segger-Staveley from Settle Harriers very close behind with 14:21 and Jack Whiteside (unattached) taking third.  First girl was Finty Royal (Red Rose Road Runners) with 14:44 ahead of Eve Hutchinson from Settle Harriers (15:36) and Hannah Coe (Queensbury) with 17:23.  Honor Jeffrey of Settle Harriers was just behind Hannah in a time of 17:35.

The combined Under 16 and Under 18 race followed at 12.15pm.  Runners set off on an out-and-back route to checkpoint one of the senior race, located amongst the Norber Erratics and involving some scrambling over rock and a technical descent.

In the Under 16 age-group, Luke Bowen (older brother of Harry and James) rounded off a highly successful day for the Bowen family  by winning and breaking the course record for the second year in succession.  His time was 17m 53s.  Not far behind in 18m12s was Oliver Gajdowski, also from Ambleside with Jacob Aubrey from Helme Hill 3rd with 18:58

There were no entrants for the U18 boys but the Under 18s girls prize was taken by Grace Jeffrey from Settle Harriers with an inaugural course record of 23:43.

The senior race (8 miles with 1,200 feet of ascent and descent) featured a record field of 169 runners who set off from Austwick Village at 1.00pm, with the weather overcast but still dry.

This year’s winner, by a close margin was Nick Charlesworth from Wharfedale, who recorded an excellent time of 50:03 – just outside the course record but probably a record for an over 40 athlete.  Second was Chris Singleton from Trawden AC in 50:08 with Rob Brown (unattached) third with 50:51.  Fourth and fifth were John Raho from Holcombe Harriers and Greg Hull (Leeds City) who is also a veteran over 40.

Leading Vet 50 was Paul Hesketh from Clayton in 56:22 with Mike Egner from Settle close behind with 56:49.  Leading Vet 60 was Jeffrey Pickup (Clayton) 64:39 and leading Vet 70 was Norman Bush (Ilkley) with a very fine 70:37

The ladies race was of a very high standard this year.  The winner was Holly Page in a fantastic time of 56m03secs which beat the existing course record (set way back in 2006 by C. Leah) by 62 seconds.  Also recording fast times were Jo Buckley (Calder Valley) who finished 2nd in 58:07 and Rachel Hill (Settle Harriers) 3rd and first lady over 40 in a time of 59:04.

The top over 50 lady was last year’s overall race winner Deborah Gowans from Accrington Road Runners with a time of 62:16.

I would like to thank all those who have been involved with the organisation of the “Amble” including residents of the village, members and friends from Settle Harriers and the CRO who were on standby in the village in case of emergencies.

– RACE INFORMATION

The Austwick Amble Fell Race will once again be held in conjunction with the village’s Street Market on Monday 25th May 2015.

-SENIOR RACE

The senior race starts and finishes in Austwick village centre (GR768684). Parking can be found on the approach roads to the village from the A65 although the centre of the village will be closed to traffic.

The senior race is run over a loop circuit of approximately 8 miles/13 km and covers a total ascent of 1200 ft/370m.

The outward journey over the first 4 miles passes through the beautiful Crummockdale limestone scenery and briefly joins Sulber Nick (which connects the Yorkshire peaks of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough). The return leg descends slowly back through spectacular scenery to Austwick, and to the start point on the village green.

The route in 2015 will be the same as last year with the closing section on tarmac road (no diversion over fields this year).

The fastest recorded times on the course are 48:44 (men – Lee Athersmith – 2013) and 57:05 (women – C Leah – 2006).

Last year 125 runners completed the senior race (160 in 2013).

– JUNIOR RACES

This year 2 new junior races (Under 14 and under 18) are being introduced to ensure that we have fuller coverage of junior age-groups.

Please note however that the races are not suitable for Under 8s due to the distance covered.

All junior races start from the village green.

NB: Ages are as at 1st January 2015

The Under 12 and Under 14 races will set off together at 11:45 am.  Under 12s and under 14 will run out of the village, turning left up Townhead Lane.  At the top of a steep climb on tarmac, they will reach the crossroads with Thwaite Lane where they will turn left then almost immediately right into a field (Dear Bought Plantation Field).

Under 12s will then complete a clockwise circuit of the field – keeping marker flags on their right at all times. On completing the circuit of the field, they will be directed out of the field and back down Townhead Lane, retracing the outwood route to the finish on the village green.

The Under 14s (who will be wearing distinctive numbers) will follow the clockwise circuit to start with but at the far end of the field will be directed through a narrow gate and will then briefly follow the senior & U16s route up a short climb to a finger post that will be marshaled. At the finger post, they will then be directed back down the outward route, through the gate and into Dear Bought Plantation Field where they will complete the clockwise circuit of the field before returning to the finish on the village green.

The Under 16 and Under 18 races will start together at 12:15pm.  The course will be the same for both age-groups (but there will be separate prizes awarded).  Runners will follow the same route as the Under 14s but will continue beyond the finger-post (turnaround point for Under 14s) until they reach Checkpoint 1 of the senior race (just before a wall and ladder-stile).  They will then be directed to return to the village following the same route (no lap of the Dear Bought Plantation Field).

The U12 race is approx 2.5k  Fastest time in 2014 was 9mins 29secs (Harry Bowen – Ambleside AC)

The U14 race is approx 3.5k.  Course not run before.

The U16 & U18 races are approx 4.2k.  Fastest time in 2014 was 18mins 16secs (Luke Bowen – Ambleside AC)

– START TIMES AND REGISTRATION

The U12 & U14 races start at 11:45am.

The U16 & U18 races start at 12:15pm.

2. All race participants must register and collect a number from the Registration Desk.

3. Once you have received your number, you are in the race! If you subsequently decide not to start the race, you must inform a race official and return your number. If you start the race then retire, you must inform the nearest marshal and you must notify race officials at the start/finish area as soon as possible.

4. Your number must be pinned to your race vest on the chest area. The number must be visible to race officials at all times during the race. Do not fold or mutilate the number. Please be prepared to call out your number if asked to do so by a race official.

5. You are required to carry “full standard kit” as required by the FRA. This means that you must carry the following during the race.

– Waterproof whole body cover

– Hat

– Gloves

– Map

– Compass

– Whistle

(Race organisers may relax these conditions if the local weather forecast allows. We will notify you on the day if we do relax these conditions).

6. There are 5 checkpoints in the race where your number will be recorded by race officials. Ensure your number is visible and call out your number if asked to do so.

7. Please familiarise yourself with the race route. Maps of the course can be purchased at the Registration Desk. Where the route is marked by flags, you must follow the route as flagged.

8. If you encounter an injured runner, please lend assistance if you can and report the injury to the nearest race marshal.

9. Fell running is hazardous! We (as organisers) will do the best we can to make the event as safe as practicable, but you (as a competitor) must accept primary responsibility for your own safety on the fells.
