AUSTWICK AMBLE FELL RACE – 30 MAY 2011
The Bank Holiday Monday started off cloudy and wet for Austwick village’s annual Street Fair and Cuckoo Festival, so it was encouraging to see a good field of 107 seniors assembling outside the Game Cock Inn for the start of the “Amble”, the fell race held in conjunction with the Fair.
The course, which takes in local landmarks such as the Norber Erratics, Nick Pot, Sulber Nick (including a section of the “Three Peaks” route) and Crummack Dale, was slippery underfoot, so fast times were not expected. However a quality field up at the front had other ideas.
The winner, in a new course record time, was Lee Athersmith in a time of 48:52, beating the old record of 49:23 set by James Logue in 2006. Lee, a versatile performer who competes on the fell, track, road and cross-country for Bingley Harriers and the RAF, continued a run of good form by holding off Carl Bell from Howgill Harriers who finished in 49:50, 10 seconds faster than his winning time from last year.
Next were James Kevan and Ted Mason, with times good enough to win the race on previous occasions.
Nicholas Charlesworth of Wharfedale Harriers, 5th overall, was the only vet inside the top ten. Alex Pilkington, from local club Settle Harriers, was the next, showing good recovery from a recent mountain bike accident.
The leading lady was Rachel Hill, who recently finished as 2nd lady in the Fellsman 62 mile race. Her time was 1:06:38, just ahead of Robyn Anderson from Preston Harriers. Third, and first W50, was Christine Whitaker of Keighley and Craven.
Earlier the juniors had experienced the worst of the weather conditions. Despite this, Josh Newbold of Wharfedale Harriers stormed home in the Under 12 race in 10:41, 1 min 23s faster than his winning time from 2010. Second was Kai Atkins from Pendle AC with William Bellard just holding off Thomas Marshall for third.
The leading girl was Natalya Irvine of Clayton le Moors Harriers in 12:02, with Kitty Morrison and Sally Ralphson battling it out for 2nd and 3rd..
In the U16 race, Ellie Lambert of Wharfedale Harriers was the overall winner in 20:59. The leading boy was Aaron Campion in 21:34.
Thanks are due to the marshalls and officials and to the local sponsors, who put up the generous prizes for the event.

The Austwick Amble Fell Race Monday 30th May
The race starts and finishes in Austwick village centre (GR768684) and is run over a loop circuit of approximately 8 miles / 13 km and covering a total ascent of 1200 ft / 370m.
The outward journey over the first 4 miles passes through the beautiful Crummockdale limestone scenery and briefly joins Sulber Nick (which connects the Yorkshire peaks of Pen y Ghent and Ingleborough). The return leg descends slowly back through spectacular scenery to Austwick, and to the start point on the village green.
The fastest recorded times are 49:23 (men – J Logue) and 57:05 (women – C Leah), both in 2006. In 2010 over 100 runners completed the race.
The Junior U16 race is run over a shorter distance of 2.25 miles / 4km, and runners are required to reach checkpoint #1 before returning to the village. Fastest time is approx 15 minutes.
The Junior U12 race is approx 1.25 miles / 2km. Fastest time is approx 12 minutes.
The Austwick Fell Race is affiliated to the Fell Running Association and is organised under FRA guidelines.
The Juniors start at 12noon. The Seniors start at 1pm.
Registration is £4 on the day, from 10:30 on the village green. Please register early!
Prizes worth £30/£20/£10 for the first three men and women. All competitors receive tee shirts. The first three juniors receive mug, tee shirt, and certificate.
Refreshments are available on the course and on the village green.
The fell race is organised in conjunction with the Austwick Street Market festivities on 30th May.
