Our W.I. meets in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month. Why not come along and see what is on offer? Visitors are always welcome.

The AGM was held at the October meeting. The President Elizabeth Booth thanked members and committee for all their help throughout the year. The Secretary’s report had been circulated earlier and Janet Huck gave an account of the finances. We welcomed Elise Wright onto the committee. Light refreshments provided by the committee were served at the end of the evening.

We had a very inspiring, interesting and entertaining evening, in November when John Walker, deputy manager of North West Blood Bikes Lancs and Lakes, came to talk about the work of his organisation. John is a keen motor cyclist and is part of a team of other riders and volunteer organisers who are committed to providing a completely free out of hours emergency service for the N.H.S., by transporting samples and supplies between Hospitals and Blood Banks. Everyone gives generously of their time and although North West Blood Bikes has 14 bikes which are owned, maintained and fuelled through fund raising and sponsorship, depending on demand, riders often use their own machines and fuel without any reimbursement.

As well as the monthly meetings, in November, Austwick W.I  were involved in several other activities including an opportunity to attend ‘Harewood House at Christmas’ and we also had a very enjoyable evening Ten Pin Bowling at Skipton.

The Group Carol Service was at Austwick this year with the theme ‘Faith’. Various W.I’s from the area gave their interpretation of ‘Faith’ which was followed by tea and mince pies.

Members, partners and friends enjoyed an evening in the company of John Dawson and his son William. John, who farms with his son at Bleak Bank, near Clapham, has become well known for his appearances on the More 4 programme, The Lakes and Dales. His illustrated talk told the story of Bleak Bank and the people who have farmed it for the last 100 years as well as episodes in the farming calendar such as hay time and preparing sheep for auction. The evening concluded with mulled wine and mince pies.

The 2019 programme began when the Rev. John Davies gave a thought provoking and interesting talk about ‘Celebrating the Ordinary’. The talk, which began with the Mass-Observation project in the post war years concluded with his time spent on a housing estate on the edge of Liverpool. The talk can be found on bit.ly/johndavies-ordinary-talk
